Exponam Analyst Intelligence vs. the Databricks Excel Add-in
A one-page comparison of cost, usability, extensibility, and functionality.
Exponam, LLC · July 2026
TL;DR
The Databricks Excel Add-in is a Databricks-only connector suited to workloads run by small, tech-savvy teams. Exponam Analyst Intelligence is the enterprise analyst layer – multi-platform, private-AI-powered, self-service by design, and cost-predictable at any scale. The two products differ materially on cost, usability, extensibility, and functionality – and the differences grow with the size of the deployment.
Where the two products differ
The table below covers the four dimensions that decide most enterprise evaluations.
| Exponam Analyst Intelligence | Databricks Excel Add-in | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fixed, volume-tiered licensing – from $10 per user per month at 100 users to $0.50 at 100,000. Free tier to 1M rows. The Delta Sharing path reads directly from cloud object storage and consumes zero DBUs, at any query volume. | No license fee, but every query runs through a SQL warehouse and consumes DBUs. Observed trial consumption of roughly 5 DBUs per analyst per day is approximately $70 per user per month at list rates.1 |
| Usability | Native Windows (VSTO) add-in – large data writes into Excel are markedly faster than the web add-in framework. Data import via SQL endpoint, AI-driven inquiry, and Delta Sharing paths. Workspace accounts are not required. | Office Web Add-in framework. Every user requires a provisioned Databricks workspace account. The product remains in Public Preview as of July 2026. |
| Flexibility and extensibility | One add-in across cloud platforms – Databricks and Snowflake today, with Microsoft Fabric in development. The analyst experience, and its governance, travel with the analyst rather than with any one platform. | Databricks only, by design. A first-party connector will not extend to Snowflake, Fabric, or other competing platforms, so each additional platform requires an additional tool. |
| Functionality | Natural-language query with a local or bring-your-own LLM – no data leaves the customer network. Direct SQL scratchpad. Extracts to 10M rows. Unity Catalog metric views supported natively through the SQL-endpoint path. | Table import, metric-view PivotTables, custom SQL, and write-back. AI querying was named as a roadmap item in April 2026 and has not shipped. Genie, when implemented, is billed pay-as-you-go in DBUs. |
Cost at scale
| Deployment size | Exponam monthly | Databricks compute1 | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 users | $1,000 | ~$7,000 | 7x |
| 1,000 users | $5,000 | ~$70,000 | 14x |
| 10,000 users | $10,000 | ~$700,000 | 70x |
The absence of a license fee is not the absence of a cost.
At the observed trial rate, Exponam is roughly seven times less expensive at 100 users, fourteen times at 1,000 users, and seventy times at 10,000 users. Even the conservative $25 per user floor produces multiples of 2.5x, 5x, and 25x respectively.
On the Exponam Delta Sharing path, there is $0 compute and $0 usage-based cost. On the Exponam SQL-endpoint path, the differential narrows slightly. Compute is consumed, but only when the analyst executes an import. There are no discovery or per-filter queries, no formula-recalculation events, and no background consumption of any kind; refresh is managed from the ribbon. Local AI text-to-SQL consumes no tokens and carries no incremental cost.
1 Based on observed trial consumption of 5 DBUs per analyst per day at the $0.70 per DBU Serverless list rate over 20 working days. Actual consumption varies with query frequency, warehouse type, and contract rate; formula recalculation in shared workbooks adds further unplanned consumption.
